What is a ROV?

A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) is an unoccupied underwater robot that is connected to a ship by a series of cables. These cables transmit command and control signals between the operator and the ROV, allowing remote navigation of the vehicle. A ROV is different from an AUV because AUVs are controlled automatically instead of manually. And a ROV is different than a Submersible because a submersible is occupied with people while ROVs are not.

     Major parts:
-Vehicle
-Tools/Sensors
-Control/Display Control
-Electrical Power Distribution
-Umbilical Cord and Tether Cable
-Handeling System

They can move both vertically and horizontally depending on the placement of the thrusters.

They sense the world with tools such as a camera or attachable arm to help them process their surroundings.

We Communicate with the ROV while it is underwater buy using chords to send electrical impulses to the ROV telling it what to do.

NOAA Ocean Explorer:
-Alvin: Created by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and used by researchers which discovered the first hydrothermal vents in the Pacific Ocean. It has located more than 24 hydrothermal sites in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It also has allowed researchers to find and record about 300 new species of animals.

-ROPOS: Created by Canadian Scientific Submersible Facility. ROPOS’ ability to carry such a wide variety of observation tools on each dive provides scientists with exceptional flexibility, as they can quickly respond to new and unexpected discoveries on the sea floor.
